Members of the profession and politicians gathered at the House of Commons on World Radiography Day (8 November) to celebrate and honour radiographers who have demonstrated clinical excellence and best practice in diagnostic and therapeutic radiography.
The Radiography Awards 2011 were presented by Chief Health Professions Officer for Scotland Jacqui Lunday and Mark van Rossum from sponsor Fujifilm.
In her pre-awards speech Jacqui said: “It seems entirely appropriate that we should be celebrating the achievements of outstanding radiographers and their teams across the UK on the anniversary of x-rays. Firstly because x-rays are such an every day part of the way we deliver healthcare services. We take for granted their importance and the way they have transformed the care of patients.
“Secondly, because celebrating is always good – we don’t do enough of it and this fantastic event is a great way to recognise and value the vital contribution radiographers make to person-centred health services that are so valued by the British public.”
She praised the winners, noting how impressed she had been reading about their achievements. She added: “Collectively you are responsible for delivering the kind of quality improvement that colleagues and the professional body are justly proud of. Delivering flexible and responsive services, reducing waiting times for better rapid access to diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy impact significantly on the patients’ pathway.
“Radiographers are at the forefront, making best use of public resources, freeing up clinical time and enhancing and leading cutting-edge patient care.
“In short, I think you are fabulous.”
