Paediatric imaging research funded by CoRIPS

A new document that has been widely welcomed by professionals involved in the imaging of young people has been published as a direct result of CoRIPS funded research.

Practice Standards for the Imaging of Children and Young People arose directly from a project funded by CoRIPS and carried out by Sandie Mathers of Robert Gordon University.

‘X-raying children: Identifying differences in practices between adult departments and dedicated children’s hospitals’ looked at the experiences of young people when they are x-rayed in departments not located in dedicated children’s hospitals. Sandie’s finding showed there is little provision specifically for children and that in many instances they are treated as ‘small adults’. Many radiographers have received little or no training regarding the imaging of children or image interpretation.

One of the recommendations from the study was that professional bodies should provide guidance for the improvement of paediatric imaging services, which lead to the publishing of the practice standards document.
