SoR names UK Radiographer of the Year 2008

SoR Radiographer of the Year 2008, Andrea Owen.

A GI consultant radiographer from the north west of England has won the title of SoR UK Radiographer of the Year 2008.

Andrea Owen scoops the award following a nomination from Professor Peter Hogg and Julie Nightingale. Both paid tribute to Andrea's professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication to radiography advanced practice and education.

Peter Hogg, past editor-in-chief of Radiography journal and radiography course leader at the University of Salford , wrote: "Andrea deserves the title for her multi-professional contribution to education and training, her committed work in advancing practice, for her conference and seminar work, and sticking her head above the parapet. She is also a good role model and a great person."

Julie added: "Since 2002, Andrea has delivered lectures and workshops at the University of Salford on a range of subjects, and has been pivotal in the marking and moderation of a range of assessments. In particular her expertise in GI radiography and radiology has been invaluable to my own programme where she has been a course team member, assisting us in developing a range of new courses.

"It is highly unlikely that without her knowledge, enthusiasm and backing we would have developed courses in new areas of practice such as radiographer-performed barium swallows and CT colonography."
It is not only in the area of education that Andrea excels, however. In the clinical setting Andrea has safely and effectively advanced her role in new areas, including reporting and performing barium enemas, barium swallows and proctograms.

Julie continues: "Andrea has taken a lead role in performing and double reporting CT colonography and capsule endoscopy. For this latter procedure she is, to my knowledge, the first radiographer to take a lead role in this relatively new small bowel examination.

"It is because of her innovative approach to advanced and consultant practice, her dedication to teaching and learning, and her enthusiasm for both evaluating, using and developing the evidence base for our expanding discipline of GI radiography that I support Andrea for the nomination."

The SoR Radiography Awards are sponsored by Fujifilm.
